Native Plants by ZIP Code in Pennsylvania: Why County Range Matters
Interpret Pennsylvania ZIP and county plant searches by separating historic range, state nativity, local records, conservation data, and garden fit.
A ZIP code makes a search convenient, but the plant source may resolve it to a county or another broader unit. Before using a result, note that geography and what the source means by “native.”
The National Wildlife Federation Native Plant Finder describes historic county-range information and may suggest nearby-county plants as additional garden candidates. An adjacent-county suggestion is not a claim that the plant historically occurred in the target county. Use it as a prompt for another check.
For a named taxon, verify the accepted scientific name and status in the Pennsylvania Vascular Plant List, then use Pennsylvania Flora’s plant search for its county-level pathway. A Pennsylvania-wide native label does not mean native in every county. County records can document a collection or occurrence without proving presence across the county or current occupancy at your address.
Some Pennsylvania nativity cases illustrate why the source’s wording matters. In its March 2025 report, the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program describes Yellow Buckeye (Aesculus flava) as historically native in Greene, Washington, Allegheny, and Beaver counties, while noting that it has also been planted elsewhere. That historical account is not a current county inventory or a ZIP-specific result.
The Conservation Natural Heritage Inventory is for conservation and planning, not a complete garden-plant list; inventory reports are snapshots and should be checked against current data where available. Ecoregion and hardiness maps can add landscape and winter-climate context, but neither establishes county nativity. Before planting, confirm the taxon, locality evidence, bed conditions, mature size, and any relevant source-origin information.
