Can Canadian nurseries ship native plants across borders?
Check the exact plant or seed, origin, destination, product form, purpose, and route with current agency tools before placing a cross-border order.

Sometimes, but a seller’s checkout option does not establish that a plant or seed may enter the destination country. “Native” describes an ecological relationship; it does not decide shipment eligibility. Before ordering, identify the exact commodity and check the current route requirements.
Build a shipment fact card
Write down the scientific name, seed or live-plant form, plant part, soil or growing medium, source country or regulated area, destination, intended use, quantity, and route. A change in species, origin, medium, or destination can change the result. Ask the seller who obtains required documents and who handles inspection, but verify the answer with the authority for the destination.
For a Canada-bound import, use the current CFIA AIRS reference tool with the commodity, origin, destination, and end use. AIRS is a frequently updated reference tool; CFIA says importers remain responsible for accurate information and applying the law. For a U.S.-bound order, start at USDA APHIS Plant and Plant Product Imports and follow the commodity-specific path. Seed, live plants, and plants with growing media may follow different requirements.
Check domestic movement too
An order that stays within one country may still cross a pest-area, state, or provincial boundary. Canada’s movement restrictions depend on the material, pest, origin, and destination. In the United States, APHIS Plant Health Contacts direct questions about state restrictions to the relevant State Plant Health Director. The selected examples in public lists are not a complete route matrix, so check the exact item and current route.
If you are carrying plants into the United States in personal baggage, use APHIS’s separate traveler guidance. Traveler rules do not replace mail-order or seller-shipment checks. For seed identity before purchase, see the online seed checks.
